Brendon Santalab says the Wanderers are preparing for a “quick” start to the 17-18 A-League season after sluggish beginning has cost them last season.
In a new our new ‘Three Questions’ series – we (very briefly) chatted to Santalab at WSW’s kit-launch last Friday to get his thoughts on the upcoming season.
Last season didn’t really go to plan; how did you reflect on last season?
“We set our expectations very high last season, but unfortunately we underachieved and didn’t get to where we wanted to be.”
“This season we’re looking for a different outcome and a quicker start. We’ve been slower in the last couple of years and had to catch-up as the season went on. So we’re definitely preparing to make sure we get significant points on the board from our first few games.”
There have been a few new arrivals at the Wanderland in Alvaro Cejudo and Oriol Riera. How have the boys been bonding?
“It’s been really good so far though, the squad has moulded together really, really well. We’ve spent some time together, getting to know the new guys. It’s a very upbeat atmosphere around the club. A really good vibe where everyone is excited and ready to go.”
“The foreigners have brought some great talent into the mix, and that’s something we’re definitely looking forward to being able to use this season. We head into preseason camp tomorrow on the Gold Coast, start really preparing for the season up ahead.”
You’re wearing the fresh new home kit – tell us your thoughts?
“The new kit is very nice. Of course, it’s very comfortable and I like the stronger black that’s been added back in this year. Every time I put this jersey on, I play with a lot of passion and pride. I love the club and playing for this team.”
“We’ve been a community club since day 1. We’ll continue to grow and work with the people who support us. I think this is really important because, at the end of the day – without the fans, there’s no football.”
