There’s a lot of BS around the world of football – but then you’ll stumble across rare handful of honest blokes who just tell it like it is. New FC Barcelona signing Paulinho fits the criteria of the latter, opening up to reporters with brutal hoensty about his move to the Catalan club.

Barca acquired the Brazilian from Chinese Super League club, Guangzhou for £35 million pounds earlier this week. It served as a surprise to many, as we all know, China is where careers go to die, as players cash-in before they look to call it a day.

But it surprised one more so than Paulinho who himself described the transfer speculation resulting in him feeling “empty.”

“When I heard of their interest I thought I’d be really excited and happy. But honestly, I’m just feeling sort of empty. I mean, why could they possibly want me when it’s clear for anyone to see that there are a host of better options out there,” he told reporters.

“Maybe the manager is trying to prove a point? Perhaps he’s sending a message to the board? Whatever it is it can’t be good, I just know it, but I can’t quite put my finger on it yet,” he continued.

Plainly put – this is odd. And to highlight how uncomfortable Paulinho is with the whole situation – he’s even demanded the club pull together a powerpoint pressie to explain to him why on earth he’s at Camp Nou.

Manager Ernesto Valverde even told the press that the charm of Leo Mess and Luiz Suarez hasn’t calmed him down and that Paulinho still thinks the whole thing is “one big practical joke.”
