Italy’s second tier ‘Serie B’ referee Marco Mainardi created history this week, handing out the first ever ‘Green Card’.
Green Cards are awarded when a player performs an act of fair play.
The new initiative was introduced at the start of the 2016/17 season, where the player with the most green cards would be given an award at the end of the season.
Mainardi gave out the first ever Green Card to Vicenza striker Cristian Galano. Galano was quick to admit that his shot did not deflect off opposing Virtus Entella defender for a corner.
Green cards are awarded to players at the conclusion of games.
