Atlético Madrid star Fernando Torres says winning the UEFA Champions League will be the clubs main goal this season.

The feeling of losing last years Champions League final to cross-town rivals Real Madrid still leaves a sour taste in the mouth of Fernando Torres.

“The Champions League has always been the dream for the club, and the last few years even more. We will work harder than before to lift that trophy for our fans,” said Torres.

Atléti have suffered multiple heartbreaks, losing to Real in the Champions League final twice in three years.

In an era so highly dominated by Spanish giants Real Madrid and F.C Barcelona, Atlético are achieving the unthinkable.

A decade of Spanish rule by Real and Barca was broken in 2014 after Atlético won their first title in 18 years.

Managed under the ever so passionate Diego Simeone, Atlético have been transformed from underdogs to warriors.

Torres starred for his childhood club, scoring over 80 goals in his six year spell for Los Rojiblancos. Notoriously nicknamed ‘El Niño’, inspired by his grandfathers love for Atlético, Torres returned home last year after multiple spells in England and Italy.

The 32 year old believes Atleti’s pre season in Melbourne is crucial for their preperation.

“For us its like we are going to play in a final like the Champions League. We have to prepare all the games from the beginning to be ready for the season,” said Torres.

“We can win as many trophies as we can but always with our feet on the ground. Along with humility and values of the team we have to dream big.”
