Sunderland are the relegation experts, remarkably avoiding the drop for the third year in a row.


Normally teams aren’t praised for finishing at the foot end of the table, but what Sunderland have achieved is extraordinary. The Black Cat’s really do have nine lives, and have become pro’s at Premier League survival.


Sunderland’s survival means arch-rivals Newcastle United and Norwich are doomed for relegation.

Hope seemed lost as they sat dead last on the table, seven points below the safety zone.

An unbelievable winning streak saw them take down the likes of Champions Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Dick Advocaat took over Gus Poyet and it wasn’t getting any easier for The Black Cats. This season was even closer than the last, as Advocaat’s side secured safety against Arsenal on the second last match day. Sunderland survived an attacking onslaught from the Gunners, earning themselves a 0-0 draw in ugly fashion.

League position: 16th *38 points

This season Sunderland have left it to the second last day once again, and for the third year in a row they sit on 38 points with one game remaining.
