THURSDAY 17 MARCH 2016
Just when you thought Juventus had them beat, Bayern score two goals to take the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 into extra time.
The Italians gave an almost perfect performance in the first half. On foreign soil, Juve were sticking it to Bayern.
It was unfamiliar territory for Pep Guardiola’s men, as Juventus forced multiple turnovers in the midfield through their relentless pressure.
Bayern had no answer for Juve’s midfield onslaught, and paid the price conceding two goals from Paul Pogba and Juan Cuadrado.
It seemed certain that the
Bianconeri had more goals on the cards, but Guardiola’s magic would soon change everything.
His decision to bring on Alcantara Thiago and Kingsley Coman would soon prove to be an invaluable one.
A goal to Robert Lewandowski brought hope for Bayern but another goal was still required to level the tie at 4-4 and take it into extra time.
Juventus looked certain to hold onto their aggregate lead, but Thomas Muller had other ideas.
Ironically it was Coman, a loaned out Juventus player who provided the cross for Muller’s equalizing goal at the death.
The goal blew the roof off Allianz Arena, we were set for extra time.
Always time for a “selfie” these days apparently
Guardiola’s master plan was paying off as Bayern scored another in extra time through Thiago.
Two minutes later and Coman sealed the deal and sent Bayern into the Quarter finals of the Champions League with a (6-4) win over Juventus.
Perhaps tonight’s story would have been different if veteran defender Chiellini,
Paulo Dybala weren’t absent from the side.
Feeling of dejection for Paul Pogba, who gave his all tonight
Regardless, Pep Guardiola is one step closer to clinching his Champions League title with the German giants before he leaves for Manchester City.
