Henrikh Mkhitaryan is already proving his worth at Arsenal, even after appearing in just one game. But this time, it wasn’t in the centre of midfield… Instead, simply by having a good old chat on the phone with now Gunner, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
In the days before Pierre decided that a move from Dortmund to North London was for him, Mkhi battered his former Dortmund teammates phone – supposedly encouraging him to make the move and join him at the Emirates.
“He called me a few times and he asked me, ‘Will you come or not?’ and I said, ‘First you have to tell me if you sign or not!,” Aubameyang told reporters after confirming the signing.
“Then he told me it was all done, and of course it was a big factor in coming here.”
The Mkhitaryan-Aubameyang duo has a bit of history. Remarkably in their final 2015-16 season together at Borussia Dortmund, the pair contributed 59 goals and 31 assists between them. Could this new combination be a god-send for Arsenal?
Big things are expected for Aubameyang at Arsenal. Wenger’s plan to hit back at the loss of (the arguably irreplaceable) Alexis Sanchez all but came off seamlessly. Whilst it’d be ambitious at best to say that Aubameyang has yet to find the same status as an Alexis Sanchez, what he offers the Gunners as a ‘fresh breath’ of attacking air, is a proposition to get excited about.
