BOY OH BOY. THIS AFTERNOON HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.
Qualification for next years FIFA World Cup in Russia was never going to be easy, but who would have thought it would be this crazy! And today was no exception with the United States not qualifying, Argentina narrowly making it in and the Socceroos discovering their play-off opponent in Honduras.
After being largely considered a shoe-in after their 4 – 0 win over Panama, the United States required just a single point from their match against last-placed Trinidad and Tobago. But after conceding an own-goal in the 17th minute and going down 2 – 0 at half-time, the USA’s qualification was back in lingo.
ANDDDDD despite a goal in the opening minutes of the second half from America’s ‘next big thing’, Christian Pulisic – it wasn’t enough. The USA went down 2 – 1 and are not going to Russia for the World Cup next year.
Leo Messi has literally picked up his country and forced them into the World Cup – scoring a hatrick to deliver a 3 -1 victory over Ecuador. The three points qualified them third in South America- but also kicked out Chile who won’t be present in Russia next year. Colombia also qualify.
Peru takes out the fifth-placed play-off spot and will face our Kiwi neighbours to battle it out for the last spot.
AUSTRALIA TO PLAY HONDURAS.
The Socceroos will play Honduras in November, following their 2-1 win over Syria last night. Honduras pulled out a stunning 3 – 2 win over table toppers Mexico to take the playoff spot. Despite being on the same points as Panama, who automatically qualify, Honduras had a worse goal difference.
WOW. WTF. WHAT A MORNING / AFTERNOON / EVENING.
You could say football was the winner – but next year’s World Cup is shaping up to be a very interesting tournament. Maybe England can actually win something?*
*Probs not – sorry not sorry.
