WATCH: Socceroos unconvincingly scrape past Saudi Arabia [3-2]

Thank god for Tom Rogic!

Australian’s will be sighing with relief after defeating Saudi Arabia 3-2 in a must win World Cup Qualifier. Tom Rogic is the savior, hitting an absolute thunder strike to win the game for the Socceroos.

It was definitely easy to be skeptical of Ange Postecoglou’s starting XI. Trent Sainsbury and Brad Smith both starting – and both with minimal game time for their domestic clubs.

Tomi Juric scored one of the easiest goals of his career, after a horrific blunder from Saudi goalkeeper Yasser Al Mosailem.

It’s as though as soon as the Socceroos took the lead, they lifted their foot off the accelerator. Pressing stopped and the Saudi’s exposed Australia’s loose defense.

Saudi Arabia’s disorganization at the back was soon to be exposed. A lovely run and perfectly weighted ball from Matthew Leckie set up an unmarked Juric for his second goal.

AUS 2-1 KSA

Ange’s back three clearly weren’t coping with striker Mohammed Al Sahlawi. Smith’s lack of game-time showed as he struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. History looked to be repeating itself, after Sahlawi equalized right on the stroke of half time.

Australia came out like a different team in the second half, turning up the attacking pressure and urgency. The game needed a hero, and Tom Rogic was happy to step up. The Celtic attacking midfielder hit a wonder strike to give the Socceroos a vital victory.

Japan, Australia and Saudi Arabia are all on 16 points.

With two games remaining, anything can happen.
