Konyaspor Kulübü defeated İstanbul Başakşehir F.K to win their first ever Turkish Cup in their clubs 95 year history.
With a population of just over a million people in Konya, the achievement to defeat a rising team from Istanbul is monumental.
Neither team could be separated after extra time, forcing the match into an epic penalty shootout. Konyaspor held their nerve, winning 4-1 on penalties.
Turkish fans are known for being hardcore, and the story was no different today. Security forces were forced to evacuate the bottom grandstand in the first half, after fans threw projectiles and flares at each other.
Winning the Turkish cup means that Konyaspor have qualified for the Europa League. It also means that Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahçe are forced to play-off for European cup football.
Funnily enough, Konyaspor manager Aykut Kocaman is the former manager of Fenerbahçe. 😂😂
