Benitez’s brilliance returns Newcastle to Premier League

Newcastle are heading back to the friggen PREMIER LEAGUE yooooo!

After a year down in the ditches of the English Championship, the Magpies saviour Rafa Benitez has lifted the side back into the ‘big league’ – with a 4 – 1 victory over Preston yesterday.

It’s a stark contrast to the position to which Benitez sat just over 12 months ago. The 15/16 Premier League season pulled out surprises at the top with Leicester City, but even worse surprises at the bottom when Newcastle with only 9 wins, was to be sent packing.

Following the sacking of Steve McClaren in March 2016 – Beneitez was left with little to work with, but a strong mandate from supporters to return the club to its ‘rightful spot in the top flight’. This mandate has seen the Magpies go from strength to strength –  under his guidance United set record season ticket sales at just under 37,000. Notably Benitez’s status and connections as a former Real Madrid and Liverpool boss was instrumental in puling down Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle to increase Newcastle’s arsenal.

Newcastle’s promotion in numbers

  • 1.1m – the total of Newcastle’s home attendances in the Championship this season. The next highest is Aston Villa with 705,000
  • 237 – Newcastle have had more shots on target this season than any other Championship side
  • 80 – The number of goals Newcastle have scored, two behind top scorers Fulham
  • 102 – The number of points Newcastle finished with in their 2009-10 promotion campaign. They can pick up a maximum of 94 this season
