Paul Pogba is one of the worlds most captivating footballers in the modern era. The 23 year old Frenchman is on the verge of breaking the world record for the most expensive transfer.
What many people don’t know, is that he has two older brothers who are also professional footballers.
Who are the Pogba brothers?
Mathias and Florentin Pogba are the elder twins to their famous younger brother. Born in the inner eastern suburbs of Paris to Guinean parents, Paul’s allegiances lie with the French national team. His two older brothers on the other hand, both opted to play for the Guinea national team.
Football has been at the forefront in the lives of the Pogba family. In a past interview with FIFA, Florentin described the importance that football has had on their lives.
“We had a burning desire to win. We told ourselves that if a sport could take us places, we’d do everything we could to get there. Football opened its doors to us, and we decided to give it a real go. We knew that we had the mental, physical and technical abilities to play professionally,” Florentin told FIFA.com.
Early days at AS Saint-Étienne were no walk in the park for 25 year old Florentin Pogba. After a difficult first season, the hardworking centre-back managed to break through into the first team. Known for his aerial ability and strength, fans regard Florentin as a wall in defence for Les Verts.
A successful 2015/16 campaign sees Saint-Étienne playing for a Europa League spot. Florentin played a full 90 minutes in their 0-0 draw against AEK Athens in the first leg.
If Saint-Étienne qualify for Europe, Florentin could potentially face his brother Paul Pogba at his next club Manchester United.
Florentin’s success at Saint-Étienne carried over to the Guinean international football team. Florentine was selected as vice captain of Guinea after the arrival of coach Luis Fernández.
“I’m not the oldest player on the team, but the current coach has given me the vote of confidence. He told me that I was one of the team’s driving forces, right now and for the future. That’s why he made me captain,” Florentin told FIFA.
Mathias Pogba is a striker for Scottish Premier League side Partick Thistle F.C. The 25 year old has never really settled, changing clubs six times in the last six years.
Mathias failed to capitalise last season, only scoring twice from his 13 starting appearances.
This season could be a turnaround for Mathias, scoring and playing a pivotal role in their 4-1 win against Stenhousemuir in the Scottish League Cup.
With a number of first team players still injured, Mathias will be given the chance to prove himself. His similarities to his younger brother Paul are uncanny, also known for his aerial ability and acrobatic style of play.
Mathias has experienced playing alongside his older brother Florentin for Guinea, although Paul Pogba has not. They will never all play together on the national stage, but dream to one day play at the same club.
“We talk about that sometimes. It’s our dream, but we know that it’s not something that’s likely to happen any time soon. It’s something we keep in the backs of our minds. In the meantime, we’re all focused on our own career development. If we did all play in the same match one day, at the World Cup, for example, then that would make us happier than we’ve ever been,” Mathias told FIFA.
