Pique clinches victory for Spain in dying seconds

It’s funny how football works, not so long ago Gerard Pique was on the receiving end of boo’s and whistles from the Spanish faithful. Today he is a national hero after scoring the last minute winner against Czech Republic.

In a match highly dominated by La Roja, somehow Czech Republic managed to withstand their pressure for 87 minutes.

We could have seen the first goal the opening 15 minutes, after Morata’s shot was supurbly saved by Petr Cech.

To his discontent, Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque decided to bring off Morata for Athletic Bilbao’s top scorer Aritz Aduriz. Funnily enough, the man to save the day played on the other end of the park, his name is Gerard Pique.

It was almost telepathic, as Barcelona veteran center back was played in beautifully by his team-mate Andres Iniesta. Cech was no match for the head of Pique, which gave Spain the three points.

Spain are now tied with Croatia on three points, and face Turkey in their next group stage match.

Can the back to back champions make it a hat-trick?
