The Matilda’s celebrated jubilantly after defeating North Korea 2-1 to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
It marks the end of a 12 year drought, that saw the Matilda’s absent from the past two Olympic games.
It’s a massive achievement for Women’s football following a bright World Cup campaign in 2015.
Recognition for women’s football often goes under the radar, despite the fact Australia’s women’s team is just as successful as the Socceroos.
The players emotion poured out onto the field, as they celebrated their ticket to Rio.
Alen Stajcic has been a pivotal factor in their recent success.
“Our goal is not just to qualify for Rio, but to get a medal, and we are aiming for a gold medal,” said Stajcic.
“It’s probably one of the most historic moments in football for this team,” said Stajcic.
“There was so much pressure before the game with the build up and the players were quite tense and nervous before the match and really wanting to get it done.
