Tommy Oar; time to shine

Words by Jacob Arnott Photography by Aleks Jason

You won’t find many more humble footballers than Socceroos & FC Utrecht winger, Tommy Oar. A product of Brisbane Roar-Postecogolu football factory, Tommy has risen to become an established footballer who is beginning to climb up the ladder of European Football.

As Australia begins their preparations for the 2015 Asian Cup, The TURF caught up with Tommy to chat about football, life and of course, FIFA!

REFLECT ON YOUR EXPERIENCE AT BRAZIL 2014

T.O The World Cup was a really good experience, with a really difficult draw. A lot of people expected us to be dominating every game. To be honest, the results were not in our favour. Pretty unlucky especially in the first two games.

HOW WAS IT PLAYING FOOTBALL, IN THE HOME OF FOOTBALL. PLAYING ON THEIR TURF

T.O  When we played Brazil earlier on, we got a glimpse of what it was like. I guess you could see from where we were staying in Vitoria, the nation was breathing, living football. Anytime of the day, a ball on the beach or the street. And their love for us, as a neutral.

PLAYING YOUR FOOTBALL OVERSEAS AND FOR THE SOCCEROOS. WAS IT SOMETHING YOU DREAMED OF, OR SOMETHING YOU WORKED HARD FOR

T.O  I guess every young player dreams to be a socceroo, growing up to become a professional footballer. The team is very young, it would be a huge motivating factor for kids back home. I guess you always dream, but when it happens, you know you have worked hard to get here

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR FOOTBALL IMPROVED OVER THE PAST YEAR

T.O Every year in Holland, I have improved. Playing against difficult teams, Im more valuable to the team today then I was when I first started. In the last year, exposed to play in more positions, started off as a left win recently as a centre midfielder. Devolpment, a great way to learn new things and make me a better footballer.

FIFA..WHO DO YOU CHOOSE

T.O The team I always like to choose, would have to be Chelsea. Not a huge fan or a fan at all.

TURF Is it the wingers?

T.O yeah! Hazard on the new FIFA is unstoppable, their defence is really strong. I also usually choose Barcelona due to Neymar.

ASIAN CUP IS A BIG OPPORTUNITY, YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE TOURNAMENT

T.O  No better way to win a trophy then on home soil, thats our goal and motivation. We all know we can do it

ANYONE WE SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR THAT YOU ARE AWARE OF

T.O Korea has a strong team, players in the Bundesliga and the Premier League. Leckie’s team mate Son is someone we need to look out for, touted to move to a larger club anytime soon.

GROWING UP, WHAT TWO OBJECTS CREATED A GOAL FOR YOU

T.O I think my Dad hated it, but we always used the garage as a goal and may have broken a few windows.

PLAYING ON HOME SOIL, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT

T.O Australia has such a great sporting culture, singing the the national anthem with so much pride, Its such a special moment for us. Having the whole nation behind us.
